Toyota Land Cruiser for sale in Kenya: 200 vs 300 vs Prado vs 70 Series buyer's guide (2026)

Land Cruiser 200, 300, Prado or 70 Series? Engines, fuel use, known faults, the 2026 import cut-off and Kenyan asking prices, checked 29 October 2026.

Checked on 29 October 2026.

Search "Land Cruiser for sale in Kenya" and you get four different vehicles under one name: the 200 Series "V8", the newer 300 Series, the smaller Prado and the work-horse 70 Series. They cost very different amounts and suit very different owners. This guide sets out what each one is, which engines you will meet here, what goes wrong with age, and what sellers were asking on the day we checked.

The quick answer

  • Prado (J150): the sensible family 4x4. It costs less than a 200 or 300 of the same year and uses less fuel than the V8s.
  • Land Cruiser 200 (V8): big, comfortable and strong for long upcountry trips and towing. Thirsty, and the last one was built in 2021.
  • Land Cruiser 300: the current model, with twin-turbo V6 engines. The most expensive by far.
  • 70 Series (76, 78, 79): a tough, basic work vehicle for farms, safaris and bad roads. Not built for comfort.

The 8-year rule: which years can you import in 2026?

Since 1 January 2026, KEBS only lets in right-hand-drive vehicles first registered from 1 January 2019. The count is by year of first registration, not manufacture. Here is what that means for each model:

  • Land Cruiser 200: only 2019 to 2021 cars can still be imported. Anything older must already be on Kenyan plates.
  • Prado J150: 2019 onwards. Its replacement, the J250, went on sale in Japan in April 2024.
  • Land Cruiser 300: every year qualifies.
  • 70 Series: 2019 onwards, and right-hand drive only, so left-hand-drive Gulf trucks are out.

Proposals to tighten the limit from 2027 have been reported, but on 21 October 2026 Tech-ish said they were a proposal, not an active rule.

The models and their engines

Land Cruiser 200 (2007 to 2021)

Built from 2007 to 2021, with a facelift in December 2011 (2012 cars) and a second one in Japan in August 2015, according to Wikipedia's model history. The engines you will see in Kenya:

  • 4.5 V8 twin-turbo diesel (1VD-FTV). Power varies by market. After the 2015 update, Australian cars were rated at 200 kW and 650 Nm.
  • 4.6 V8 petrol (1UR-FE). Japanese catalogue listings of 200s show this engine (model code URJ202W), so most Japan imports are petrol.
  • 5.7 V8 petrol (3UR-FE), sold in some markets.

Fuel: Australia's official combined figure for the diesel was 10.3 L/100km at launch and 9.5 L/100km on a 2020 GXL, which used 13.2 L/100km on CarAdvice's test. Japanese ratings for the 4.6 petrol work out at roughly 14.5 to 14.9 L/100km. Expect more in Nairobi traffic.

Land Cruiser 300 (2021 onwards)

Toyota Japan's March 2025 spec sheet lists two engines, both twin-turbo V6s with a 10-speed automatic:

  • 3.3 diesel (F33A-FTV): 226 kW, 700 Nm. WLTC rating 9.7 km/L (about 10.3 L/100km).
  • 3.5 petrol (V35A-FTS, 3,444 cc): 305 kW, 650 Nm. WLTC 7.9 to 8.0 km/L (about 12.5 to 12.7 L/100km). Toyota specifies premium petrol.

Ground clearance is 225 mm. Count the seats: in Japan the diesel ZX and GR Sport are five-seaters, while most petrol grades have seven.

Prado J150 (2009 to 2023)

Built from October 2009 to October 2023, with facelifts in 2013 and 2017 (source). The engines common here:

  • 2.8 turbo-diesel (1GD-FTV), which replaced the 3.0 (1KD-FTV) around 2015. It was rated at 130 kW and 450 Nm, then 150 kW and 500 Nm from 2020.
  • 2.7 petrol (2TR-FE), 120 kW in Japan.

Japanese WLTC ratings run from 8.3 km/L for the 2.7 petrol to 11.2 km/L for the 2.8 diesel (about 12.0 and 8.9 L/100km). Some grades seat five and some seven.

70 Series (76 wagon, 78 Troop Carrier, 79 pick-up)

  • 4.2 diesel (1HZ): six cylinders, no turbo. Slow but simple.
  • 4.5 V8 diesel (1VD-FTV): in the 70 Series since 2007. In Australia it was rated at 151 kW and 430 Nm, manual only, 10.7 L/100km combined.
  • 2.8 diesel (1GD-FTV): added in 2023 with a six-speed automatic, rated at 150 kW and 500 Nm. Japan brought the 70 back in November 2023 with this engine.

Known issues to check

Land Cruiser 200 diesel

Unsealed 4X4's June 2026 fault guide lists:

  • Injectors: on 2015-on piezo injectors, failed seat washers let fuel leak into the cylinder. Signs are rough idle, smoke and poor economy.
  • DPF and EGR (2015 on): rough idle, power loss, heavy smoke. Regular long drives help the filter clean itself.
  • Dust in the airbox: a poor seal lets dust past the filter. This can trigger a MAF sensor fault, limp mode and, in bad cases, a failed turbo.
  • Driveline clunk when stopping and pulling away, usually dry universal joints. A cheap fix.
  • Oil filter housing leaks. Rare, but expensive if missed.

On oil use, CarsGuide says early 200s had a seal on the vacuum pump drive that let oil into the pump. We also looked for proof of a common 200 Series front differential failure and found no reliable source, so we don't list it. Still have the diffs and CV boots checked for leaks, especially on lifted cars.

Prado 2.8 diesel

In Australia, Toyota agreed in October 2026 to a A$750 million settlement over faulty diesel particulate filters (DPFs). The court still has to approve it. The claim covers HiLux, Prado and Fortuner models acquired there between 1 October 2015 and 23 April 2020. A blocked filter can cause foul white smoke, higher fuel use and repeat repairs. Toyota has offered a free fix since May 2020. If the car came from Australia, ask whether that fix was done. For any diesel, look out for white smoke and warning lights. A car used only for short town trips is a risk.

Land Cruiser 300

Toyota Australia has run two campaigns on the 300:

  • Diesel exhaust fuel injector (August 2025): this injector can clog on cars built between July 2021 and February 2025. The warning reads "Engine Maintenance Required".
  • Transmission software (February 2026): a recall covering a failed gear-shift solenoid that goes unreported.

These were Australian actions. For any 300, ask a Toyota dealer to check the VIN for open campaigns.

Prices in Kenya

These are sellers' asking prices on Garisea's Land Cruiser listings on 29 October 2026, not sale prices. Mileage and condition move prices a lot.

Model and yearsAsking prices seen
Prado J150, 2015–2018KES 3,790,000 – KES 7,200,000
Prado J150, 2019–2021KES 5,900,000 – KES 9,300,000 (one 2021 Kakadu at KES 11,500,000)
Prado J250, 2024KES 14,500,000 – KES 15,500,000
Land Cruiser 200 ZX 4.6 petrol, 2018–2019KES 11,000,000 (two listings)
Land Cruiser 300, 2021–2024KES 13,900,000 – KES 19,500,000

Garisea's price summary for the same day gave a median asking price of KES 20,000,000 for the 300. For a 2019 200 Series, an import dealer's December 2025 estimate put Nairobi yard prices at KES 11,500,000 – KES 12,000,000 for the 4.6 petrol and KES 14,500,000 – KES 15,500,000 for the diesel ZX. There were too few 70 Series listings to give a range.

What to check when you view one

  • Papers first. The chassis number on the car must match the logbook. NTSA's new e-logbook has verification features to confirm it is genuine.
  • Start it cold. Ask the seller not to warm it up. Watch for smoke and listen for injector knock.
  • Dashboard: no DPF, engine or "maintenance required" warnings.
  • Under the bonnet: look at the clean side of the airbox for dust, check the oil level, and look for oil and coolant leaks.
  • Test drive: feel for clunks when stopping and pulling away, and try low-range 4WD and the diff lock.
  • Underneath: check for rust, bent parts and damage from rough roads.
  • Seats: count them. Five-seat and seven-seat versions look the same from outside.
  • Service history: ask for records, especially for injector or DPF work.

Questions buyers ask

Prado or V8: which is better for Kenya?

The Prado is cheaper to buy and run, and plenty for most families. The 200 Series V8 has more room, more power and more towing strength, but it uses more fuel and costs more to buy.

Can I still import a 2018 Land Cruiser?

No. In 2026 only right-hand-drive vehicles first registered from 1 January 2019 can be imported. A 2018 car has to be one already registered in Kenya.

How much fuel does a Land Cruiser V8 use?

The diesel 200 was rated at 9.5 to 10.3 L/100km in Australia, and one road test recorded 13.2. The 4.6 petrol is rated at about 14.5 L/100km in Japan. Expect more in traffic.

Is the Land Cruiser 300 diesel or petrol better?

On Toyota's figures, the diesel uses less fuel (9.7 against 7.9 km/L) and has more torque. The petrol has more power but needs premium fuel, and in Japan more petrol grades have seven seats.
