What DBA, DAA and 6AA mean, how GDJ150W or ZRE162G reveal engine and generation, engine codes like 1NZ-FE, grades like TX-L, and Demio vs Mazda2.
In one line: a Japanese import carries three codes worth reading, a model code like DBA-ZRE162G, an engine code like 2ZR-FAE and a grade like 1.5 G, and together they tell you the car's age band, fuel, engine, drive and equipment level.
Checked on 29 October 2026.
Words to know
- Model code: the code on Japanese papers, like DBA-ZRE162G. Japanese call it the katashiki (型式).
- Emissions prefix: the three characters before the hyphen, like DBA. The Japanese government sets them.
- Engine code: the name of the engine, like 1NZ-FE.
- Grade: the trim level, like TX, G or X. It decides the equipment.
- Chassis number: the car's unique number. On Japanese cars it is usually the model code plus a serial number, not a 17-character VIN.
- Export certificate: the paper Japan issues when a car leaves its register to be exported.
- Hybrid: a car with a petrol engine and an electric motor working together.
Japanese names vs export names
Many cars sold in Japan wear a different name from the same car elsewhere. Kenyan sellers use both, so it helps to know the pairs:
- Mazda Demio = Mazda2. Mazda renamed the Demio "Mazda2" in Japan in 2019 (Mazda).
- Mazda Axela = Mazda3. The new Mazda3 went on sale in Japan in 2019 without the Axela name (CarGuide.PH).
- Toyota Vitz = Yaris. The first Yaris of 1999 was sold in Japan as the Vitz. The new model took the Yaris name in Japan too, on sale from February 2020 (Openers).
- Honda Fit = Jazz. Honda says "Fit" is used in Japan, North and South America and China, and "Jazz" in Europe and Asia/Oceania (Honda).
- Nissan Note and Toyota Probox keep the same name. The Probox is a Japanese commercial van; its sister model, the Succeed, was sold until 2020 (Wikipedia).
A Demio and a Mazda2 from the same year are usually the same car underneath, but Japanese-market equipment can differ, so check the grade.
The model code: two halves
Japan's transport ministry (MLIT) explains that the part before the hyphen is the government's emissions ID and the part after it is chosen by the maker (MLIT). So in 3DA-GDJ150W, "3DA" comes from the government and "GDJ150W" from Toyota.
The emissions prefix
MLIT's official table gives each of the three characters a job:
- 1st: which exhaust rules, and how clean. A, C and D = the 2005 rules (no rating, 50% lower, 75% lower). L = the 2009 rules, for diesels. 3, 4, 5 and 6 = the 2018 rules (no rating, 25%, 50% and 75% lower).
- 2nd: fuel. A = petrol hybrid, B = petrol, C = diesel hybrid, D = diesel, L = plug-in petrol hybrid.
- 3rd: use. A = passenger car. Goods vehicles get other letters.
| Prefix | What it says | Example |
|---|---|---|
| DBA | 2005 rules, 75% cleaner, petrol, passenger car | DBA-ZRE162G (Corolla Fielder 1.8) |
| DAA | 2005 rules, 75% cleaner, petrol hybrid | DAA-HE12 (Note e-POWER) |
| LDA | 2009 rules, diesel | LDA-GDJ150W (Prado diesel, 2015) |
| 3DA | 2018 rules, diesel | 3DA-GDJ250W (Land Cruiser 250) |
| 5BA | 2018 rules, 50% cleaner, petrol | 5BA-MXPA10 (Yaris petrol) |
| 6AA | 2018 rules, 75% cleaner, petrol hybrid | 6AA-MXPH10 (Yaris hybrid) |
The prefix is a quick age clue. Toyota said its 2015 diesel Prado met the 2009 diesel rules, so those cars usually read LDA-GDJ150W, while a Japanese dealer catalogue lists later ones as 3DA-GDJ150W: same car, newer rules. Codes from before 2005 (such as GH- or TA-) follow older tables that this one does not cover. Fully electric passenger cars start with ZAA.
The maker's half
Toyota's codes usually start with the engine family, then a platform letter, then the series number (Wikipedia, citing Toyota manuals):
- GDJ150W: GD = the 1GD-FTV diesel, J = Land Cruiser family, 150 = the 150-series Prado. Toyota does not say what the final W means.
- ZRE162G: ZR = the 2ZR-FAE 1.8 petrol, E = Corolla family, 16 = this Fielder generation, 2 = the variant. The final G probably means wagon. The 1.5 Fielder, with a 1NZ-FE engine, is NZE161G (Toyota).
- MXPH10: the Yaris hybrid (M15A-FXE engine). The petrol Yaris is MXPA10 (Toyota Japan).
- HE12: Nissan's Note e-POWER. The petrol Note is E12. Nissan publishes no key for the letters (Nissan Japan).
Tap the codes below to decode them piece by piece, including a Lexus badge:
RX Radiant Crossover, Lexus's own nickname for the RX. Others: NX Nimble Crossover, UX Urban Crossover, LX Luxury Crossover, GX Grand Crossover, ES Executive Sedan, IS Intelligent Sports, LS Luxury Sedan.
In kid words: The family name. RX is Lexus's medium-big SUV.
450 Power tier, not displacement. Lexus UK's RX technical specification lists the 450h's engine as a 3,456 cc V6 (2GR-FXS), roughly 3.5 litres.
In kid words: 450 does not mean 4.5 litres.
h Hybrid (petrol engine plus electric motors). On newer Lexus models, h+ = plug-in hybrid (e.g. NX 450h+) and e = fully electric (e.g. UX 300e).
In kid words: h is for hybrid: petrol plus electric.
This RX 450h is the 2015 to 2022 generation. Its engine code 2GR-FXS follows Toyota's rules: X = hybrid (Atkinson cycle), S = D-4S injection.
3 Japan's MLIT emissions ID, 1st character: '3' = meets the Heisei 30 (2018) exhaust regulation with no extra low-emission rating. Under the same regulation, 4, 5 and 6 = certified 25%, 50% and 75% lower emissions.
In kid words: Which year's clean-air rules the car passed (2018 rules).
D 2nd character = fuel and hybrid: D = diesel (light oil), not hybrid. B = petrol/LPG non-hybrid, A = petrol hybrid, C = diesel hybrid.
In kid words: D for diesel.
A 3rd character = vehicle use: A = passenger car.
In kid words: A people-carrying car, not a lorry.
GD Engine family: the GD diesel family, here the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre (2,754 cc) turbo-diesel. Toyota's model codes start with the engine letters.
In kid words: Which engine is inside: the GD diesel.
J Platform letter: J = Land Cruiser family, carried over from the first Land Cruisers.
In kid words: J means Land Cruiser.
150 Series and variant: '15x' = the 150-series Land Cruiser Prado (2009-2023 in Japan). The last digit marks a variant within the series (0 = base).
In kid words: Which generation: the 150 Prado.
W The last letter is part of the code, but Toyota doesn't publish what it means, so don't read anything into it. Match the whole code on the export certificate instead.
In kid words: A last letter Toyota uses. Even experts aren't sure what it means!
Everything before the hyphen is the government emissions ID; everything after it is chosen by the maker. Earlier Prados of the same shape were 'LDA-GDJ150W' (L = Japan's 2009 diesel rules). The newer Land Cruiser 250 diesel is '3DA-GDJ250W', with the same 1GD-FTV engine.
6 Heisei 30 (2018) regulation, certified 75% below that standard. That is Japan's top 5-star low-emission level.
In kid words: Passed the 2018 clean-air rules with top marks.
A Petrol (or LPG) HYBRID.
In kid words: A here means petrol plus electric.
A Passenger car.
In kid words: A car for people.
MXPH Toyota's maker code for the Yaris hybrid, which has an M15A-FXE 1.5-litre engine. In Toyota's own Yaris spec sheet, MXPA = the petrol (non-hybrid) version with an M15A-FKS engine, and MXPH = the hybrid. Toyota does not publish a key for each letter.
In kid words: Toyota's code for 'Yaris hybrid'.
10 Series and variant. In the same spec sheet, MXPH10 = front-wheel drive and MXPH15 = E-Four (electric 4WD).
In kid words: Which version: 10 is front-wheel drive.
Correction to the brief: '6AA-MXPA10' does not appear in Toyota's sheet. The petrol Yaris is '5BA-MXPA10' (5 = 50% below the 2018 standard, B = petrol non-hybrid), and the hybrid is '6AA-MXPH10'. After later updates Toyota lists the hybrid as MXPH14/MXPH17.
D Heisei 17 (2005) exhaust regulation, certified 75% lower (4-star). Under the same regulation, C = 50% lower and A = no extra rating.
In kid words: Passed the 2005 clean-air rules with good marks.
B Petrol, not hybrid.
In kid words: Petrol only.
A Passenger car.
In kid words: A car for people.
ZR Engine family ZR, here the 2ZR-FAE 1.8-litre (1,797 cc) petrol.
In kid words: Which engine is inside: the ZR.
E Platform letter E = Corolla family.
In kid words: E means Corolla.
162 16 = generation/series (the 160-series Corolla Fielder, 2012-), 2 = variant within it. The 1.5-litre Fielder with a 1NZ-FE engine is NZE161G.
In kid words: Which version of the Corolla.
G Probably 'wagon/van': in Toyota's model-code format, G in this position marks a wagon or van, and the Fielder is an estate. Toyota's current Japanese pages don't spell it out.
In kid words: Probably means it's the estate (wagon) shape.
Toyota's own history site lists this exact code: 'DBA-ZRE162G-AWXSP' with a 2ZR-FAE engine, 1797 cm3 and 103 kW, Corolla Fielder 1.8 S, launched 11 May 2012. The '-AWXSP' part is Toyota's internal grade/option suffix.
1 Development order within the family: the 1st engine of the GD family. It is NOT litres.
In kid words: The first GD engine Toyota made.
GD Engine family (series) letters. GD is Toyota's diesel family launched in 2015. The 1GD is 2,754 cc.
In kid words: The engine's family name.
F 'Economy' narrow-angle 4-valve twin-cam (DOHC) head, designed for efficiency.
In kid words: An engine built to save fuel.
T Turbocharged.
In kid words: Has a turbo that blows in extra air.
V Common-rail fuel injection (diesel only; Toyota markets it as D-4D).
In kid words: Modern high-pressure diesel injection.
Toyota doesn't officially publish what these letters mean; the meanings shown are the long-standing ones used by Japan's motoring press. The 1GD-FTV is a 2.8-litre turbo common-rail diesel (130 kW at launch in 2015, 150 kW and 500 Nm in later versions).
2 2nd engine developed in the ZR family. The 2ZR is 1.8 litres (1,797 cc), so the digit is not engine size.
In kid words: The second ZR engine, not 2 litres!
ZR Engine family ZR (4-cylinder petrol).
In kid words: The engine's family name.
F Economy narrow-angle 4-valve DOHC head.
In kid words: Built to save fuel.
X Atkinson-cycle engine for hybrids, tuned for efficiency rather than punch.
In kid words: A hybrid engine that sips fuel.
E Electronic fuel injection.
In kid words: A computer controls the fuel.
The 2ZR-FXE is the 1.8-litre hybrid engine in the Prius (6AA-ZVW51). The 2ZR-FAE in a Corolla Fielder (ZRE162G) is the same family without the hybrid X. Other letters you may meet: G = performance twin-cam, Z = supercharged, S = direct injection (D-4/D-4S).
D Heisei 17 (2005) exhaust regulation, certified 75% lower.
In kid words: Passed the 2005 clean-air rules with good marks.
A Petrol hybrid. Japan's MLIT classes Nissan's e-POWER, where a petrol engine only makes electricity and an electric motor drives the wheels, as a petrol hybrid.
In kid words: Petrol plus electric.
A Passenger car.
In kid words: A car for people.
HE12 Nissan's code for the Note e-POWER, with an HR12DE-EM57 powertrain (1.2 L generator engine plus EM57 motor). In Nissan's own spec sheet, E12 = Note petrol 2WD (DBA-E12) and NE12 = Note 4WD (DBA-NE12). Nissan does not publish meanings for the letters.
In kid words: Nissan's code for 'Note e-POWER'.
Grades on the same sheet: e-POWER S / e-POWER X / e-POWER MEDALIST, and for petrol S / X / MEDALIST / X DIG-S / X FOUR. Grade letters are labels on a ladder, not abbreviations Nissan explains.
Engine codes: 1NZ-FE, 1GD-FTV, 2ZR-FXE
Toyota has never published an official key, but Japan's Motor-Fan magazine explains the long-standing pattern:
- The first digit is the order of development, not the size. 1NZ is the first NZ engine. A 2ZR is 1.8 litres and a 1GD is 2.8 litres.
- The letters before the hyphen are the engine family (NZ, ZR, GD, TR).
- The letters after the hyphen describe the build. F = economy twin-cam head, G = performance twin-cam, T = turbo, E = electronic fuel injection, X = Atkinson cycle (the efficient type used in hybrids), S = direct injection, V = common-rail diesel injection, A = variable valve lift (Valvematic).
So 1NZ-FE is the first NZ engine with an economy twin-cam head and fuel injection: 1,496 cc and 80 kW in the 2012 Fielder. 1GD-FTV is a 2.8-litre turbo diesel with common-rail injection. 2ZR-FXE is the 1.8-litre hybrid engine in the Prius. Newer engines such as M15A do put the size in the middle: 15 = 1.5 litres. Letters like K (as in M15A-FKS) have no confirmed meaning.
Grades: TX, TX-L, VX, G, X, Z
Grade letters are rungs on a ladder, not abbreviations, and the ladder changes by model, market and year:
- Prado 150 (Japan, 2015): TX, TX "L Package" and TZ-G. The "TX-L" on Kenyan imports is the TX L Package: it cost more than the TX, and Toyota made LED headlamps standard on the diesel L Package (Toyota). Kenyan dealers also use VX and VX-L.
- Land Cruiser 250 (Japan, 2024): ZX, VX and GX (Toyota Japan).
- Yaris (Japan, 2019): X, G and Z, with Z at the top.
- Corolla Fielder (2012): 1.5 X, 1.5 G and 1.8 S. The X and G share the same 80 kW 1NZ-FE engine. X is the cheapest grade; on later Fielders the G adds items such as Toyota Safety Sense C, automatic air conditioning and auto-folding mirrors (car-me.jp).
- Honda Fit (2013): 13G and 15X, where 13 and 15 are the engine size (Honda).
Where to find the codes
- Export certificate: issued by MLIT; New Zealand's transport agency notes it carries the model code (NZTA).
- Auction sheet: lists the model code and chassis number. Our auction sheet guide shows where.
- On the car: the chassis number is stamped on the body; ask the seller or your mechanic to show you. It should match every paper, including the logbook after transfer.
Things buyers often miss
Same name, different engine
From April 2015 Toyota fitted a new 2NR-FKE engine to the front-wheel-drive CVT versions of the 1.5 Fielder, while other 1.5 versions kept the older 1NZ-FE (Car Watch). The Note can be a petrol E12 or an e-POWER HE12. The code tells you which.
4WD hides in the code
Toyota's Yaris sheet lists MXPH10 as two-wheel drive and MXPH15 as E-Four (electric 4WD). Nissan's Note is E12 in 2WD and NE12 in 4WD, with "FOUR" in the grade name.
Front-wheel drive: the engine pulls the car with the front wheels. Light, roomy and good on fuel. Most small cars and many crossovers.
Rear-wheel drive: a shaft takes power to the back wheels, which push the car. Balanced and sporty, used in BMWs, Mercedes saloons and pickups.
All-wheel drive: the car sends power to all four wheels when it needs grip, usually automatically. Safer in rain and on murram. Subaru, Audi quattro, VW 4MOTION, Toyota RAV4 AWD.
Four-wheel drive: a transfer box splits power to both axles, often with a low-range gear for steep, muddy or rocky tracks. Land Cruiser, Prado, Hilux and Defender. Part-time 4WD you switch on; full-time 4WD is always on.
DAA and 6AA mean hybrid
If the second letter is A, the car is registered as a petrol hybrid, whatever the advert says. Nissan's Note e-POWER carries DAA too, even though only its electric motor turns the wheels.
Fuel from the tank goes to the engine, and the engine turns the wheels. Diesel engines use less fuel and pull harder at low speed; petrol engines are quieter and cheaper to fix. Fill up at the pump, nothing to charge.
A mild hybrid is a normal petrol or diesel car with a small battery and a starter-generator. It helps the engine pull away and lets it switch off at lights, saving a little fuel. It cannot drive on electricity alone and you never plug it in.
A full hybrid, like a Toyota Aqua or Honda Fit Hybrid, has an engine and an electric motor. In slow traffic it can creep along on electricity, and braking charges the battery. It uses much less fuel in town. You still only fill up with petrol, there is no plug.
A plug-in hybrid, like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, has a bigger battery you charge from a socket. Short trips can be fully electric; on long trips the petrol engine takes over. Cheapest to run if you charge every night.
An electric car has no engine and no fuel tank. You charge the battery from a plug, and an electric motor turns the wheels. Silent, smooth and cheap per kilometre, but plan where you will charge, and how far you can go on one charge.

Questions buyers ask
Is the Mazda 2 the same as the Demio, and the Mazda 3 the same as the Axela?
Yes. Mazda dropped the Japanese names in 2019. Same-generation cars are usually the same underneath; check the grade.
What does DBA mean on a Japanese car?
A petrol, non-hybrid passenger car certified 75% cleaner than Japan's 2005 exhaust rules.
What does 1NZ-FE mean?
The first NZ-family engine, with an economy twin-cam head (F) and electronic fuel injection (E). It is a 1.5-litre petrol.
What is the difference between a Prado TX and TX-L?
Equipment, not engine. TX-L is the TX "L Package", the better-equipped and dearer version.
Does the first number in an engine code tell me the size?
No. It is the order the engine was developed in. A 2ZR is 1.8 litres.
Can two cars with the same name and year have different engines?
Yes. A 2015 Fielder 1.5 can have a 1NZ-FE or a 2NR-FKE. Read the model code and engine code on the papers.
