A monthly budget for a small hatch, a wagon and an SUV in Kenya: fuel, insurance, service, repairs, tyres, parking, washing and the effect of a car loan.
In one line: before fuel and tyres, a small Toyota driven to Nairobi's CBD every working day costs roughly KES 18,000–20,000 a month to keep, an SUV about twice that, and fuel is usually the single biggest line on top.

Words to know
- Running costs: everything you pay to keep a car on the road after buying it.
- Comprehensive insurance: cover for your own car as well as other people. Priced as a percentage of your car's value.
- Third-party only: the legal minimum. It pays for damage you cause to others, not to your own car.
- Minor and major service: a minor service is mainly oil and filters; a major service adds more parts and checks.
- Repair fund: money you put aside every month for the repairs nobody plans, such as a battery or brake pads.
- km/L: how many kilometres a car goes on one litre. Higher is cheaper.
- EPRA: the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, which sets maximum pump prices on the 15th of each month.
Start with how far you drive
Fuel depends on distance, so begin there. The only national figure we found is from a University of Nairobi study for GIZ and the State Department of Transport (December 2018). It found Kenyan passenger cars average 22,671 km a year (give or take 2,496 km), about 1,890 km a month.
Read that number with care. It came from odometer readings at fuel stations in late 2017, divided by the car's age, so kilometres driven in Japan before import are included, and taxis may be in the count. The authors call it "on the higher side" and note that Kenya has no official mileage data. If you only commute, check your own odometer over a month and use that.
A monthly budget for three example cars
We used three common cars with example values based on median asking prices on Garisea on 29 October 2026: a 2019 Toyota Vitz (KES 1,400,000), a 2019 Toyota Fielder (KES 1,900,000) and a 2019–2021 Prado 2.8 diesel at KES 7,500,000, inside the asking range in our Land Cruiser guide. Distance is 1,890 km a month.
| Per month | Small hatch (Vitz/Yaris 1.0) | Wagon (Fielder 1.5) | SUV (Prado 2.8 diesel) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy used (WLTC city figure) | 15.3 km/L | 15.0 km/L | 8.7 km/L |
| Fuel | about 124 litres of petrol | about 126 litres of petrol | about 217 litres of diesel |
| Insurance (comprehensive) | KES 4,960 | KES 6,730 | KES 21,880 |
| Service | KES 3,750 | KES 3,750 | KES 3,750 or more |
| Repair fund | KES 1,700–3,300 | KES 1,700–3,300 | KES 1,700–3,300 or more |
| CBD parking (22 days) | KES 6,600 | KES 6,600 | KES 6,600 |
| Weekly wash | KES 1,000–1,400 | KES 1,000–1,400 | KES 1,000–1,400 |
| Tyres | price of four tyres in your size ÷ months they last | ||
| Total before fuel and tyres | about KES 18,000–20,000 | about KES 19,800–21,800 | about KES 34,900–36,900+ |
Now add fuel. The hatch needs about 124 litres at KES 226.96 per litre, the Fielder about 126 litres at the same price, and the Prado about 217 litres at KES 227.76 per litre. Multiply, and fuel is usually the biggest single line. The calculator below does the sum for you; slide it to your own distance.
Official economy figures (JC08/WLTC are Japanese tests, EPA American); owners usually get 20–30% worse, more in Nairobi traffic. Electricity is an all-in estimate for a home using over 100 kWh a month; the KPLC e-mobility tariff is cheaper at night. Prices: EPRA Nairobi pump prices 15 Oct–14 Nov 2026 (source). Updated every month.
Line by line
Fuel
We used the WLTC "urban" figures from Toyota Japan's catalogues for the Yaris 1.0, Fielder 1.5 and Prado 2.8 diesel, because town driving is closer to Nairobi traffic than the combined figure. These are still lab results; air conditioning, idling and hills add more. Prices change every month, so check the latest EPRA list:
| Month | Petrol | Diesel | Kerosene |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | KES 226.96 ▲ +12.93 | KES 227.76 ▲ +9.90 | KES 219.87 ▲ +28.49 |
| September 2026 | KES 214.03 | KES 217.86 | KES 191.38 |
| August 2026 | KES 214.03 | KES 217.86 ▼ -5.00 | KES 191.38 |
| July 2026 | KES 214.03 | KES 222.86 | KES 191.38 |
For scale, petrol was held at KES 214.03 from mid-July to 14 October 2026, then rose by KES 12.93 on 15 October. Fuel VAT is at a temporary 8%; if it returns to 16%, pump prices would rise by roughly 7%.
Insurance
Comprehensive cover is priced as a share of the car's value. AutoMag puts it typically between 3% and 7.5% a year, with most insurers setting a minimum premium of about KES 37,500. It also reports 4.25% common below KES 2.5 million and 3.5% above; we used those. Small levies and stamp duty come on top. Get at least three quotes.
Service and repairs
For a 1,500–2,000cc car, The Standard estimated two minor services of about KES 10,000 and one major of about KES 25,000 a year (KES 45,000, or KES 3,750 a month), plus KES 20,000–40,000 a year for unexpected repairs. We found no reliable published figure for a Prado, so treat its service and repair lines as a floor. A big diesel takes more oil and dearer parts; ask a garage for a quote on the exact model.
Tyres
We could not find a reliable, dated price list for Kenyan tyres, so the table gives the formula instead. Ask two tyre shops for a fitted price for your exact size (it is printed on the tyre wall). SUV tyres are larger and usually cost more than small-car tyres.
Parking and washing
Nairobi's CBD daily parking fee is KES 300, so 22 working days come to KES 6,600. If your office has free parking, delete that line. A normal body wash costs about KES 250–350 (Money254, last updated December 2023), so a weekly wash is KES 1,000–1,400.
The loan effect
If you borrow, the instalment can dwarf all of the above. In our car loans guide, a KES 2,000,000 car with a 20% deposit, financed at 14% over 48 months, costs about KES 43,722 a month, around twice the Fielder's running costs before fuel. Budget for yearly comprehensive insurance on top of the instalment. MNM is not a lender; we point buyers to bank and asset finance.
Ways to cut the bill
- Compare insurance quotes at every renewal.
- In heavy traffic, a hybrid uses far less fuel than a petrol car of the same size.
- Park outside the CBD and walk, or use a matatu for the last stretch.
- Keep tyres at the right pressure and service on time; neglected small jobs become big repairs.
Questions buyers ask
How much does it cost to fuel a car per month in Kenya?
Divide your monthly kilometres by the car's km/L, then multiply by the pump price. At 1,890 km, a Vitz-sized car needs about 124 litres at KES 226.96 per litre.
What is the cost of maintaining a car in Kenya?
For a 1,500–2,000cc car, The Standard estimated about KES 45,000 a year for servicing plus KES 20,000–40,000 for repairs. Its full yearly bill, with insurance and a tracker, could "easily reach" KES 200,000.
Is third-party insurance enough?
Third-party cover is required by law, but it will not pay to fix your own car after a crash or theft. If the car is on a loan, read the loan terms on insurance before you choose.
Why does my cheap car's insurance cost more than the percentage says?
Because of the minimum premium. A KES 800,000 car at 4.25% works out at KES 34,000, but most insurers charge at least about KES 37,500.
Will Nairobi parking go up?
Possibly. In July 2026 the county proposed at least KES 535 a day. It needs approval in a County Finance Act before it can apply.
Are there costs that only come once a year?
Yes. Insurance is usually paid yearly, and The Standard counted about KES 30,000 for a tracker. Set money aside monthly so renewal month does not hurt.
