2WD, 4WD or AWD? Drive types and ground clearance for Kenyan roads

FWD, AWD and 4WD explained for Kenyan buyers: how to spot a 4WD Vezel or Fielder, what 4WD costs in fuel, and ground clearance in mm for popular models.

In one line: most Kenyan drivers are fine with front-wheel drive and about 160 mm or more of ground clearance; pay for AWD or 4WD only if you really drive on murram, mud or steep farm roads, because it costs you fuel, weight and tyres every month.

Checked on 29 October 2026.

Words to know

  • Drive type: which wheels the engine pushes. Japanese spec sheets write front-wheel drive as FF or 2WD.
  • AWD (all-wheel drive): all four wheels can be driven, and the car decides how much goes where. There is no button to press.
  • 4WD or 4x4: a tougher system, usually with a lever or knob, often with low range.
  • Low range (4L): an extra set of very low gears for crawling up steep, slippery or rocky ground.
  • Diff lock: a switch that makes two wheels turn together, so one spinning wheel cannot waste all the power.
  • Ground clearance: the gap, in millimetres, between the road and the lowest part under the car.
  • Approach angle: how steep a slope the front bumper can meet before it scrapes.

The five drive types in plain words

Drive typesWhich wheels get the power?
engine

Front-wheel drive: the engine pulls the car with the front wheels. Light, roomy and good on fuel. Most small cars and many crossovers.

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD): the front wheels pull the car. Light, cheap to run and used by most small cars and crossovers.
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD): the back wheels push. Common on two-wheel-drive pickups and some saloons.
  • AWD: usually front-wheel drive most of the time, with the rear wheels joining in when the fronts slip. Honda calls its version Real Time AWD and says it "smoothly shifts to 4WD" when sensors detect slip (Honda, 2013 Vezel launch). Toyota's hybrid E-Four drives the rear wheels with a separate electric motor, listed as the rear motor (RAV4 spec sheet).
  • Part-time 4WD: you drive in 2WD and select 4WD when the road gets bad. Toyota lists the Hilux double cab with "part time manual 4x4" and a manual rear diff lock (Toyota Rwanda).
  • Full-time 4WD: all four wheels are always driven, with a centre differential so it is safe on tarmac. The Prado is sold as "all time 4x4" (Toyota Rwanda), and the Land Cruiser 300 adds a manual rear diff lock on most versions (Toyota Rwanda).

4WD vs AWD: the real difference

Both drive four wheels. A true 4WD adds hardware for hard work: low range and often diff locks. Most AWD crossovers, such as the Vezel, CX-5, X-Trail and RAV4, have no low range. AWD helps you on a wet, slippery road. 4WD with low range helps you climb a muddy, rutted farm track with a full load.

When to use 4WD low

Low range is for going slowly with lots of pulling power: a steep murram hill after rain, deep sand, a stuck car, launching a boat. Stop or slow to walking pace before selecting it. Back on a good road, return to high range.

Diff locks

Use a diff lock only when a wheel is spinning in mud or hanging in the air, and switch it off once through. Left on, it makes the car resist turning on firm ground.

Is the Honda Vezel 4 wheel drive? How to tell from the model code

Some Vezels are 4WD, and the badge rarely says so. The model code on the chassis plate, export certificate or auction sheet is the surest guide:

  • Honda Vezel, 2021 onwards: RV5 is the hybrid FF, RV6 the hybrid 4WD and RV4 the petrol 4WD (Honda Japan spec sheet).
  • Honda Vezel, 2013 to 2021: RU1 (petrol) and RU3 (hybrid) are FF; RU2 (petrol) and RU4 (hybrid) are 4WD (Honda Japan archive).
  • Toyota Fielder: the 2006 generation's 4WD 1.8 is ZRE144G and the 2WD is ZRE142G (Toyota). In the 2012 generation, NZE164G is the 4WD (Wikipedia), while NZE161G is 2WD (Toyota).
  • Mazda Demio (2014 on): DJ3FS is 2WD, DJ3AS is 4WD (Mazda spec sheet). The F and A in the code give it away.
  • Nissan X-Trail (T32): 4WD cars are listed as NT32 (for example this exporter listing) and use Nissan's ALL MODE 4x4-i system (Nissan).

Not every code tells you: Mazda's CX-5 uses KF5P for both 2WD and 4WD 2.5 litre cars (Mazda). So also look under the back of the car. A 4WD has a rear differential, a round housing between the back wheels.

What 4WD costs you every month

Fuel. Honda's own figures for the current Vezel e:HEV X: 26.0 km/L for FF and 21.5 km/L for 4WD on the WLTC test. The 4WD is also 80 kg heavier (Honda). Drive 1,500 km a month and the 4WD burns about 12 litres more. At Nairobi's October 2026 cap of KES 226.96 per litre of super petrol (Citizen Digital), that is about KES 2,700 a month, or KES 33,000 a year. Real-world figures are worse than lab ones, but the gap remains.

Tyres. AWD cars are fussy. Mazda's owner's manual says to replace all four tyres at the same time, keep them the same size, brand and tread pattern, and never mix worn tyres with new ones, because the AWD system "is calibrated for all four wheels being of the same dimensions" (Mazda). One ruined tyre on a pothole can mean buying four.

Servicing. A rear differential and, on true 4x4s, a transfer case need their own oil changes.

Ground clearance: what is good for Kenyan roads?

Here are manufacturer figures for cars Kenyans buy. Numbers are for an empty car. A full load of people and luggage sits lower.

Model (generation, market)DriveGround clearance
Mazda Demio (2014 on, Japan)2WD or 4WD145 mm
Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid (East Africa)2WD161 mm
Honda Vezel (2016 model, Japan)FF / 4WD185 / 170 mm
Honda Vezel e:HEV (current, Japan)FF / 4WD185 to 195 / 170 to 180 mm
Toyota RAV4 hybrid (2026, Japan)AWD (E-Four)190 mm
Mazda CX-5 (2017 on, Japan)2WD or 4WD210 mm
Subaru Forester (2019, Asia)AWD220 mm
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (Kenya)Full-time 4WD205 to 215 mm
Toyota Land Cruiser 300 (Kenya)Full-time 4WD235 mm
Toyota Hilux double cab 4x4 (East Africa)Part-time 4WD293 to 310 mm

Two warnings. 4WD can mean less clearance: the 4WD Vezel sits 15 mm lower than the FF. And markets measure differently. Mazda Japan quotes 210 mm for the CX-5, while European spec sites list 192 mm for the same generation (Autotijd). Compare figures from the same market.

A rough guide, based on the figures above:

  • Tarmac in town, the odd bump: 140 to 155 mm works if you drive with care.
  • Estate roads, murram, potholes: aim for about 160 to 190 mm.
  • Rural roads, farms, rainy-season mud: 200 mm and up, ideally with real 4WD. See our Land Cruiser buyer's guide and best 7-seaters.

Body kits and lowered imports

Many Japanese cars arrive with aero body kits, lower front lips or lowering springs. Japan only requires 9 cm of ground clearance for road use (Kuruma News, citing the transport ministry rule), so a legal car in Tokyo can be far too low for a Kenyan estate. A body kit cuts clearance and approach angle, so the brochure figure no longer applies. Check the auction sheet for notes about modifications, and look at the front lip and under the sills for scrapes.

Speed bumps: the overlooked scraper

The Kenyan standard KS 774:2000 limits speed bumps to 10 cm high (Kenyans.co.ke), but not every bump on an estate road follows it. A tall, short bump catches the nose, then the middle of the car. Go over slowly; in a low car, crossing at a slight angle lets one wheel climb at a time. A full car sits lower, so take extra care.

Questions buyers ask

Is the Honda Vezel 4 wheel drive?

Some are, most are not. Check the code: RU2 or RU4 (older) and RV4 or RV6 (2021 on) are 4WD. RU1, RU3 and RV5 are front-wheel drive.

What is good ground clearance for a car in Kenya?

About 160 mm or more for daily life with murram and potholes, 200 mm or more for rural roads. Small hatchbacks around 145 mm need care on bumps.

Which small cars have good ground clearance?

Of the models above, the Vezel (170 to 195 mm) and Corolla Cross (161 mm) give clearly more than a Demio (145 mm). Check the figure for the exact year and grade.

Can I drive in 4WD on tarmac?

With AWD or full-time 4WD, yes, that is how it is designed. With part-time 4WD such as many Hilux models, no: Toyota tells Hilux owners to use 2WD (H2) for normal road driving and save H4 for off-road, mud or slippery surfaces (Toyota UK). On dry tarmac the front and rear axles fight each other, which wears tyres and can damage the drivetrain.

One of my AWD tyres is new and three are worn. Is that a problem?

It can be. Mixed tyre sizes or wear make the wheels turn at different speeds, which strains the AWD system. Follow your owner's manual, which may tell you to replace all four.

Does 4WD help me stop on wet murram?

No. Four driven wheels help you move off and climb, not brake or corner. Before paying for any 4WD, have a mechanic check that it engages: MNM's own mechanic inspects every car, and you may bring yours before paying. See current stock at mnm.co.ke/cars.
