Manual vs automatic vs CVT vs dual-clutch: which gearbox should you buy in Kenya?

CVT meaning, CVT vs automatic, DSG problems and towing limits, explained for Kenyan buyers, with fluid, cost and test-drive checks for each gearbox.

In one line: for Nairobi traffic any two-pedal gearbox is easier than a manual, and a well-serviced CVT or automatic suits most buyers, but each type has its own fluid, its own weak spots and its own test-drive checks.

Words to know

  • Gearbox (transmission): the part between engine and wheels that lets the engine turn at a comfortable speed whatever your road speed.
  • Clutch: a plate that connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox.
  • Torque converter: a fluid coupling that lets a normal automatic move off smoothly without a clutch pedal.
  • CVT: continuously variable transmission. No fixed gears, just a smooth, endless range.
  • Dual-clutch (DCT, DSG): an automated manual gearbox with two clutches.
  • Mechatronics: the computer and hydraulic unit that shifts a dual-clutch gearbox.
  • Judder: a shake or shudder you feel as the car pulls away.

The four types at a glance

In a manual you press the clutch pedal and move the gear lever yourself. Small gears for pulling away, bigger ratios for speed. Cheap to fix and you feel in control, but tiring in Nairobi traffic.

Manual

You press the clutch and move the lever yourself. A manual is simple and usually the cheapest to fix, and it gives you full control on steep murram or in mud. The catch is traffic: an hour on Mombasa Road means hundreds of clutch presses, and a learner riding the clutch wears it out fast.

Automatic (torque converter)

The classic automatic has a set of gears that it changes for you, with a torque converter instead of a clutch pedal. It is the toughest choice for heavy work: Toyota Kenya's new Land Cruiser Prado uses an 8-speed automatic. Smaller cars use it too. Mazda dropped the CVT for a 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic in the Demio from the 2014 generation onwards. Most Kenyan mechanics know them well.

CVT: what it means

A CVT has no fixed gears. Two cone-shaped pulleys are joined by a steel belt or chain. As the pulleys change width, the ratio changes smoothly, a bit like a bicycle with endless gears. The Standard describes CVTs as smoother and more fuel-efficient than a normal automatic, but warns the belt can stretch or wear and that CVTs need trained technicians.

Many small Japanese cars Kenyans buy use one. Toyota's 2012 Corolla Fielder used its "Super CVT-i". Subaru has used its chain-type Lineartronic CVT as standard on most models since 2014. Some Toyotas from 2018 onwards use a Direct Shift-CVT with a real first gear for pulling away, which Toyota says improves efficiency where belts are weakest.

CVT vs automatic: which is better?

In stop-start town driving, a CVT is smooth and usually thrifty. A conventional automatic copes better with heavy loads, towing and long climbs, and repairs are more familiar to most garages. Neither is "bad"; servicing matters more than the type.

Is a CVT good for Kenyan roads?

For city use and highway cruising, yes. Be kinder to it on long, steep climbs, rough murram with a full load, or when pulling a trailer, because heat is what wears a CVT. Use the "L", "B" or manual mode on long descents so the engine helps with braking.

Dual-clutch (DSG, DCT)

A dual-clutch gearbox is two manual gearboxes in one case. One clutch handles 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th, the other handles 2nd, 4th and 6th, so the next gear is always ready and shifts are very fast, as Volkswagen's DSG shows. The 7-speed DQ200 used in many small VWs has dry clutches; the 6-speed DQ250 runs its clutches in oil. A combined computer and hydraulic unit, the mechatronics, does the shifting.

The overlooked part is the mechatronics. In 2013 Volkswagen Australia recalled 25,928 Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy models with the 7-speed DSG to replace the mechatronic unit after reports of power loss. Honda's Fit Hybrid and Vezel Hybrid use a 7-speed dual-clutch too, and Honda recalled 81,353 of them in 2014 to fix gearbox software that could stop the car moving off. If you buy one of these used, ask whether recall work was done.

Fluids and servicing

CVT fluid is not ATF. This is the most expensive mistake a roadside garage can make. Nissan's X-Trail manual says to use only Genuine Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3 and warns that any other fluid "may damage the CVT", with the damage not covered by warranty. Other brands have their own CVT fluids too. Ask to see the bottle, and check it matches your manual.

  • How often: it depends on the car, so follow the manual. Toyota's Corolla manual for Brazil, quoted by O Mecânico, says to replace CVT fluid every 80,000 km or 48 months under severe use. Ask a mechanic whether your driving counts as severe.
  • What it costs: a Standard Motors article put transmission fluid from KES 4,500, gearbox repairs at about KES 38,000 to KES 190,000, and a new gearbox at about KES 230,000 to KES 430,000. Those were converted from US dollar figures, so get a local quote.
  • Dual-clutch: wet-clutch versions need their oil changed on schedule; dry-clutch versions still need the mechatronics in good health. Use a garage that has the right diagnostic tools.

Warning signs, by type

  • Manual: the engine revs but the car doesn't speed up (slipping clutch), grinding into gear, a burning smell, or a spongy pedal.
  • Automatic: slipping, late or thumping shifts, or a delay before the car moves after selecting D or R.
  • CVT: shudder when pulling away, a rising whine, a sudden loss of acceleration, or overheating, all listed by The Standard. In the US, Nissan extended CVT warranties on some models after owners complained of cars that "jerk, shudder, judder and clunk".
  • Dual-clutch: shudder when creeping in traffic, warning lights, or a sudden loss of drive.

Can you tow with a CVT?

Often yes, within the maker's limit. Subaru Australia rates petrol Foresters at 1,800 kg with trailer brakes and 750 kg without. Hybrids are lower at 1,200 kg. A Japanese-market import may have a different rating, so check your own manual. Some small cars carry no towing rating at all. Towing near the limit up a hill builds heat, so go easy.

Test-drive checks

  • Manual: pull away in 3rd from slow. If the engine doesn't nearly stall, the clutch may be slipping. Every gear should go in cleanly.
  • Automatic: from cold, select R and D. Each should engage promptly, without a long pause or a thump. Shifts should be smooth under light and hard throttle.
  • CVT: pull away gently on a slope and feel for judder. Listen for a whine that rises with speed. Ask for receipts showing the right fluid.
  • Dual-clutch: creep in slow traffic for a few minutes and feel for shudder. Try a hill start, and check reversing into a parking bay.

Whatever you choose, have a mechanic check the gearbox before you pay. At MNM our own mechanic inspects every car, and you can bring your own. Browse cars in stock, and if you are importing, the auction sheet guide shows where the gearbox type is listed.

Questions buyers ask

What does CVT mean on a car?

Continuously variable transmission: an automatic with no fixed gears, using pulleys and a belt or chain.

Are CVT problems common on Toyotas?

Most trouble comes from wrong or old fluid and heat. A CVT with service records and the correct fluid is a reasonable buy.

Can a garage use normal ATF in my CVT?

No. Use only the CVT fluid named in your manual. The wrong fluid can damage the gearbox.

Why does my car shudder when pulling away?

On a CVT or dual-clutch, launch judder is a known warning sign. Get it checked early; a fluid or software fix is cheaper than a new gearbox.

Is a DSG gearbox reliable?

Many run well, but the mechatronics and clutches are the weak spots. Check recall and service history.

Is a manual cheaper to run?

Usually cheaper to repair, but in Kenyan traffic a two-pedal car is far easier to live with. See our car loans guide if budget is the question.
