The P38A was the second-generation Range Rover, built from 1994 to 2002. The 4.6 HSE uses Rover's 4.6-litre V8, which from 1999 ran Bosch Motronic management (the 'Thor' engine) and makes about 218 PS and roughly 400 Nm. It comes only with a ZF four-speed automatic. Drive goes to all four wheels through a two-speed transfer box with low range. Electronic air suspension offers five ride heights, from a low 'Access' setting to 'Off-Road Extended'.
It suits a buyer who wants a classic, comfortable luxury 4x4 and accepts the running costs of a large petrol V8. Published figures are about 16.5 L/100 km combined (around 6 km/L) and nearly 24 L/100 km in town, from a 100-litre tank. At this age, check that the air suspension rises and lowers through every height setting and holds its level overnight. Check that the automatic gearbox and the high/low range shift cleanly, and that all the electrical comfort features work. Before buying, ask your mechanic where they would source V8 and air-suspension parts.
